How to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami at home

Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna which is celebrated in whole India every year with great devotion and enthusiasm. Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Sravana and worshipped by people in different forms. Lord Krishna, Lord Ayyappa, Lord Narayana and some other gods are different forms of Lord Vishnu so they are also worshipped with equal devotion and dedication Janmashtami festival. How is Janmashtami Celebrated in temples?


 In India there is a great rush of devotees at temples where the festivities begin before dawn and continues until midnight, the exact moment of the anniversary of Krishna’s appearance. Temples are decorated with flowers and exhibits depict scenes of Lord Krishna life cycle. Many cultural and spiritual events take place at these temples like Bhajan Kirtan a form of singing in which Lord’s name is sung along with other devotees. All the idols of the temple decorated with new clothes preferably yellow, flower and garlands. Images of Krishna's infancy are placed in swings and cradles in temples so that devotees can also take pleasure to swing their lord. At midnight, Main priest of the temple bathe the Lord Krishna with pure Gangajal i.e. water from the holy River Ganges, milk, ghee and honey which known as abhisheka, he put these ingredients onto the Lord through the conch and worship the baby idol of Lord Krishna, ringing of bells, singing of Krishna prayers and ‘aartis’ as a part of Janmashtami rituals. At last specially cooked food that includes makhan mishri, milk and milk products, fruits offer to Lord Krishna as Bhog Prasad which is distributed among the devotees later who break their long day fast after eating this Prasad only.

How to celebrate Janmashtami at home?


Cannot go to temple for celebrating Janmashtami need not to worry you can enjoy the Janmashtami celebrations at home and also invite your friends and family for Janmashtami celebration. First decorate your home for Krishna, involve your kids in this home décor work like in making garlands, hanging balloons and other decorations which make the house beautiful for Krishna’s birthday. If you have Krishna idol at home then purchase or make new outfits, jewelry, garlands, peacock feathers for them preferably in yellow color or you can also buy a small cradle from the market in which you can place baby Krishna idol.

In temples at least one hundred and eight different food dishes are prepared to offer lord Krishna and distribute as Prasad but at home it is not possible to cook such a big feast so just make some essential food items to offer to the Lord which you can also distribute as Prasad after Janmashtami pooja. Now at midnight which is considered as the birth time of Krishna, Janmashtami Puja begins with abhisheka bathing ceremony. For abhisheka bathing ceremony arrange yogurt, honey, ghee, and milk and Ganga jal and bathe the deity with them while singing devotional songs, collect the Charnamrit in vessel. Light incense sticks, kapoor (camphor) and ring bells to create devotional atmosphere. After giving a bath to lord Krishna make Him seated and dressed him with new clothes. Prepare puja thali which have sweets, Aarti Diya, fruits, Tulsi leaves (holy basil leaves), Akshatha (rice), sandalwood paste or powder, and flowers to offer lord Krishna. Light the lamp (Aarti Diya), offer flowers, Akshatha (rice), sandalwood paste or powder, Tulsi leaves, sweets and fruits and perform aarti (a special prayer made to offer god).

After performing all rituals, distribute the Charnamrit and other eatable items from the puja thali among all the devotees present at that time so that they can break their fast.
