Home Remedies to Cure Cold and Flu

Winter is here and some of us may fall prey to certain infections like common cold and seasonal flu caused by certain viruses. Common cold and flu can affect your daily routine badly as you will get fever, headaches, running nose, chest congestion which affect you badly. Usually we take lots of medicines to rid from this condition which can have some side effects like dizziness, lack of energy and lots more. Here we are with some natural remedies to treat cold and flu at home.


How to treat Cold and Flu naturally


  • Drinking a cup of hot water 5 to 6 times a day can help you to get rid from common cold or chest congestion which ensures that the phlegm (mucus) moves from the lungs to the intestine from where it can be excreted.
  • Many herbs like cumin powder, ginger powder, black pepper, white pepper, turmeric powder and lemon grass can dissolve the phlegm so boil them with water or add them in your soups to get rid from flu and cold.
  • Drink lemon tea with honey to get rid from cough and cold. Mix 2 teaspoons of lemon juice with a cup of warm water ads a tablespoon of honey in it mix well. The acidity of the lemon juice breaks up the mucus.
  • Suffering from dry cough then boil ginger root in water, add black pepper to taste and a half teaspoon of honey, drink this decoction two three times a day to get some relief. Decoction made of cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, lemon grass, along with mulethi (liquorice) is also very effective and soothing.
  • Add few drops of eucalyptus oil in hot water and inhale the steam to get relief from cough and cold. Whole body sauna and steam also helps to get the phlegm moving.
  • Add ½ teaspoon of Turmeric powder (haldi) in one glass warm water and drink twice a day it acts as a natural antibiotic and immunity booster.
  • Make a decoction with a pinch of ajwain, onion juice and gur (jaggery) and drink once a day to get rid from common cold.

How to make decoction


  • To make decoction first mash or chop the herbs and then boil in water to extract oils, volatile organic compounds and other chemical substances. Decoction method is used for hard, woody substances (such as roots, bark, and stems) to get their essence.
